The architecture of objects connected in one way or another with water is often based on a subtle dialogue between the building and the natural context. Developers have to adapt to conditions where it is necessary to take into account the harmony of internal and external spaces. Different types of swimming pools show how effective such solutions can be. Ten different pools, located around the world, vividly demonstrate these architectural finds.

1. Reconstruction of the square and pool in Mazatlán, Mexico

The architects from Colectivo Urbano revived this unusual pool in 2015. It was originally built in 1915: its creators were inspired by the sea pools in Lisbon. The Carpa Olivera Hotel, of which this pool is a part, has long been a community center on Olas Altas Beach in the historic center of Mazatlán. Many famous people of that time gathered here. In 1954, it was destroyed by a hurricane, and only in 2004 was the first, not very successful, reconstruction carried out. Later, Colectivo Urbano proposed to save this public space. It has been redesigned, cleaned and restored to its former glory. In addition, there is a new play element here: a spiral slide, which is loved by locals and tourists. The same design became an expressive seaside sculpture.

2. Swimming pool at Hubertus Hotel, Valdaora, Italy

Hotel Hubertus is located in Valdaora at the foot of the famous Kronplatz skiing and hiking area in the Puster Valley at an altitude of about 1350 m above sea level. A new 25m pool serving as a link between the old and the new highlights the essence of this comprehensive revamped family refurbishment project. noa* architects have combined innovation and tradition: a uniform façade, in keeping with the natural terrain, creates the theatrical basis for a cantilevered pool that rises between the old and new residential wings, floating between heaven and earth.

3. Reconstruction of the swimming pool in Lingolsheim, France

Urbane Kultur was responsible for transforming the old swimming pool, built in the 70s by Bernard Scheller, into a modern complex. This object was designed in rationalist aesthetics. It has amazing spatial qualities, natural light, good communication between indoor and outdoor space and an elegant structural design. The project retained the simplicity of the original solutions: the extensions that appeared over time were demolished, and the area freed up by moving the changing rooms made it possible to place three stainless steel pools under the dome.

4. Stella Maris camping pool, Umag, Croatia

Camping Stella Maris is located in a pine forest in Umag, an Istrian coastal town. It was necessary to create a new pool with all amenities on the territory of the camp and integrate it into the new camping concept. The project was created in cooperation with the construction bureau IF Projekt doo from Rovinj, who was responsible for the arrangement of the entire camp and construction. Sun terraces and pools are carved into gentle slopes, while indoor spaces take advantage of the existing height difference and are located under green roofs. The main feature is that there is no straight line in the structure that separates the complex from the rest of the camp: it merges with the environment.

5. Feng Shui swimming pool, Issy-les-Moulineaux, France

This swimming pool was designed by the architects from Mikou Studio in the spirit of fluidity and openness. There is a lot of natural light coming from the windows of the facade and from the “glass carpets” on the roof. The interior and solarium are covered with a movable glass roof, providing natural ventilation in summer. The outer walls are lined with wavy wooden planks, whose pattern is reminiscent of circular movements on the surface of the water and indicates the circulation of energy and flows, important to the theory of feng shui.

6. Thermal pool, Furnas, Azores

The thermal springs of Poca da Dona Beija are one of the most popular places on the island of São Miguel in the Azores. The M-Arquitectos studio was commissioned to upgrade the previously existing infrastructure of the thermal complex. In terms of architectural form, the new building strives for a balanced relationship with the environment. Two new pools, tanks and foot baths have appeared here: this increases the capacity of the thermal zone. They are located on the northern bank of the river and are built according to existing structures and are reached by a footbridge.

7. Thermal Hotel Therme Vals, Grisons, Switzerland

Built over the only thermal springs in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland, Therme Vals Hotel & Spa is designed by Peter Zumthor . The architect hoped that visitors would be able to experience the full sensory experience here. The spa tubs, which opened in 1996, predate the existing hotel complex. The idea was to imitate the shape of a cave or a quarry, so the bathrooms were placed under a grassy roof half sunk into the hillside. Therme Vals is built from layers of Valser quartzite slabs quarried locally. This stone became a source of inspiration for the architect.
